The CV joint can be separated from the drive shaft quite easily. It's an easy job too. It's a pity your not in Britain, sounds like they can't be ar*ed to fix it they just want to replace the whole lot. Lazzy so and sos!!!!

Thanks for that - yes that just confirms our suspicions. Otherwise - why are the cv joints sold separately? Hubby hasn't been able to get hold of a 36 mm socket just yet to remove the nut - closing day Mondays here! I have sourced the cv joint on Ebay at least - from a buyer who will send to France -so we can get the ball rolling. That's a relief!

Here's a few piccies of when i did it a few weeks ago. Bar was needed then wip the ball joint off then tap the cv out of the hub (15-20mm) then just pull all the bits out of the way then gently lever the driveshaft away from the gearbox. Mind the rubber gaitor and the gearbox seal!!! Then strip and clean the drive shaft. The circlip is a bit of a pain but does knock off in the end. Then fit new boots and grease em up The off side is just the same but with the intermediate shaft cap to take off before removal. Then your ready to go PS. I would get the Volvo CV gaiter kits as all the bits come in the kit and you get the right grease in the right amounts. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice/support. The old gal is back on the road and recuperating nicely! The part took a while to arrive from the UK but it was worth the wait for the difference in prices. Now............if we may ask a little more advice please re: shockers and track rod ends. Hubby has replaced track rod ends a couple of times before on other makes (suppose the principal is more or less the same?) but has never replaced shockers. We are going to buy the parts in the UK next month - can any of you offer advice on doing these jobs please? i.e. Do we need any specialist tools, any pitfalls to be aware of, etc? Thanks!

Hi, not done track rod ends myself - but I get the impression that you push the ball joint out of the steering knuckle and then count how many turns to undo the track rod arm, put the new one back on the same number of turns then take it to get its tracking done. Does that sound about right? As for shockers, JodT5 has put together a maintenance page which has a link on this: Glad to hear the CV change went well. Cheers, Pete
