Hi guys, I posted a while ago about a high idle speed, sometimes i would pull up at traffic lights etc and it would idle at 850 then creep back up to sometimes 1,000 rpm but usually a fraction below. All the throttle etc is clean. I cant find anything wrong. Anyway i bumped into a guy who used to work at Volvo main dealer and couldn't resist asking him the question! He said probably MAF sensor fault. I was quite surprised and he said it was quite common. I have no other symptoms like hunting, cutting out, misfiring etc. What do you guys reckon before i consider buying a new one? (2.5 20v v70 '97)

Mine idles just under 1000rpm too and It's had a new MAF sensor in it with no change. You could see if someone will swap one over for you without shelling out for one that may not cure the problem. I suspect my slightly high idle is due to an air leak but I'm yet to find the dam thing!!!!!!

Sometimes to test the MAF's (never done it on a Volvo's but do so on the likes of BMWs/Merc's etc), we simply disconnect the sensor that plugs into the MAF. In theory the ECU should then use a default value for the air flow. You can rev/drive the car and see what difference it makes (but you will most likely get your EML come on).

Yes, that works on my C70 DSK. My MAF died just after I bought the car, but as soon as the sensor was removed, the engine ran fine.

The idle air valve is clean, yes. However it could still be faulty. Thanks v much Mike for that offer! I've not looked at the p/n but ill keep that in mind for the future-IACV maybe! I disconnected the MAF as suggested above (thanks) and no difference on idle. Just lack of power as expected. So that must be ok. Hmmmm.... either trying another idle air valve or last resort replacing manifold gaskets is all i can think of now. Or just live with it? Im going to do a 4-gas at work when i get chance to see if that gives any clues.

I had the same issue in the past. Like when pulling into a red stop light, the engine would suddenly increase revs and with automatic I had to be a bit cautious to prevent the car to "Crawl" a bit. For a few months ago the engine started to stall and eventual died while idling. Itturned out to be a faulty MAF sensor. After replacing it the engine seems more smooth than I ever recall. A suggested by other members is ti disconnect the MAF for a short while. The ECU will switch to a limb home mode and use the throttle position sensor a control input. O2 sensor and adaption is the disabled. Though the engine will lack throttle response you will be able to determine if your symptom is curred. Good luck.
